| طراحی هوشمند به عنوان یک جنبش اجتماعی با انتقادهای فیلیپ جانسون به طبیعت‌گرایی و داروینیسم و همراهی او با افرادی همچون مایر، دمبسکی و بیهی و حمایت فیلسوفانی همچون پلنتینگا، مورلند و کریگ در دهۀ آخر قرن بیستم شکل گرفت. در نگاه آنان طراحی هوشمند یک برنامۀ پژوهش علمی با مشارکت دانشگاهیان است که نشان خواهد داد بر عالم یک طراحی هوشمند حاکم است. سوبر به عنوان یکی از منتقدان طراحی هوشمند معتقد است که طرفداران ایدۀ طراحی هوشمند گرفتار تطبیق‌های ناقص در مورد پدیده‌ها هستند. از نظر او طراحی هوشمند شرط آزمون‌پذیری را ندارد و در نتیجه قابل ورود به عرصۀ علمی و تحقیقاتی نیست. در این مقاله نشان داده شده که اولاً تصویر او از آزمون‌پذیری کامل نیست. ثانیاً طراحی هوشمند، می‌تواند، با ملاحظاتی، همان معیار سوبر را نیز تأمین کند. اساس اِشکال او ناشی از تصور نادرستی است که از وجود یک طراح هوشمند فراطبیعی دارد. نقد نخست این مقاله را می‌توان، علاوه بر یک تقریر قیاسی معتبر از کبرای برهان نظم، انتقادی بر طبیعت‌گرایی روش‌شناختی نیز در نظر گرفت. | ||
